When Was Kabaddi Introduced to the Asian Games? Full History
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Kabaddi has become one of the most popular sports at the Asian Games, with India establishing itself as the leading nation in the competition. However, the sport had a long journey before becoming an official medal event. Kabaddi was first showcased at the Asian Games as a demonstration sport before receiving full medal status.

So, when was kabaddi introduced in Asian Games competition as an official medal sport? In 1990, when men’s kabaddi made its official debut at the Beijing Asian Games. Women’s kabaddi was added much later, making its medal debut at the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010.

Kabaddi Asian Games History

The early kabaddi Asian Games history dates back to the 1951 Asian Games in New Delhi. Kabaddi was showcased as a demonstration or exhibition sport during the event. It was again presented in the same way at the 1982 Asian Games, also held in New Delhi.

These appearances helped introduce kabaddi to sports officials and teams from across Asia. The sport’s combination of speed, strength, contact and tactical play eventually helped it gain recognition as a competitive Asian Games discipline.

The major breakthrough came at the Beijing Asian Games in 1990. Men’s kabaddi became an official medal sport, with six nations taking part in the tournament. India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, Japan and Nepal competed in a round robin format.

Kabaddi Debut Asian Games: 1990

The kabaddi debut at Asian Games took place in Beijing in 1990. India dominated the inaugural competition, winning all five of their matches to finish at the top of the standings and claim the first men’s kabaddi gold medal.

Bangladesh won the silver medal, while Pakistan took bronze. India’s success at the first kabaddi Asian Games marked the beginning of a remarkable period of dominance that would continue for several editions.

The competition format later changed. At the 2006 Doha Asian Games, kabaddi moved from a pure league format to a system featuring group stages, semi-finals and a final.

Women’s Kabaddi Makes Its Debut

Women’s kabaddi received official medal status at the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010. Eight teams competed in the first women’s tournament, with India winning the inaugural gold medal.

India defeated Thailand in the final to become the first women’s Asian Games kabaddi champions. Four years later, India successfully defended the title at Incheon 2014 by beating Iran.

The biggest upset came at Jakarta Palembang in 2018. Iran ended India’s long triumphant run by winning both the men’s and women’s gold medals. It was the first time India failed to win the kabaddi gold in an Asian Games edition.

Asian Games Kabaddi Gold Medal Winners

India have won 11 Asian Games kabaddi gold medals, including eight in the men’s competition and three in the women’s event. Iran are the only other country to win gold, with one men’s and one women’s title.

In the men’s competition, India won gold in 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022. Iran won the 2018 title.

In the women’s competition, India won gold in 2010, 2014 and 2022, while Iran won in 2018.

The 2022 Asian Games were held in 2023 because of COVID 19 postponements. India returned to the top in both categories, defeating Iran in the men’s final and Chinese Taipei in the women’s final.

With kabaddi continuing to grow across Asia, the sport’s long journey from a demonstration event to a major medal sport remains an important part of Asian Games history.
