The story of Kabaddi stretches back thousands of years, but one year stands above all others in shaping the modern game. The 1990 Asian Games in Beijing transformed Kabaddi from a regional sport into an internationally recognized medal event. It was the moment that changed the history of global Kabaddi forever and laid the foundation for the sport’s worldwide growth.

Today, Kabaddi is played professionally across multiple countries, but much of that success can be traced back to its official debut at the 1990 Asian Games.

1990 Kabaddi Tournament History

The 1990 Kabaddi tournament history began at the 11th Asian Games, held in Beijing, China, in September 1990.

Although Kabaddi had previously been showcased during the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, those appearances were only exhibitions. The sport did not carry official medal status, limiting international interest and government investment.

Everything changed in Beijing. For the first time, Kabaddi became an official medal sport at a major international multi-sport event.

The competition featured six nations:

  • India
  • Bangladesh
  • Pakistan
  • China
  • Japan
  • Nepal

The teams competed in a round-robin format, with every nation facing each other.

India dominated the tournament, winning all five matches to claim the first-ever Asian Games gold medal in Kabaddi. Bangladesh finished with the silver medal, while Pakistan secured bronze after a closely contested campaign.

Kabaddi International Expansion

The inclusion of Kabaddi at the Asian Games sparked rapid Kabaddi international expansion.

One of the biggest changes was the participation of countries outside South Asia. China and Japan had to quickly establish national teams and training systems to compete in Beijing. Their involvement proved that Kabaddi could be played successfully beyond its traditional heartland.

Official recognition also encouraged governments to invest in the sport. National federations received greater financial support, coaching programs expanded, and players began training in structured environments instead of relying solely on local competitions.

The tournament also accelerated the shift from outdoor mud courts to standardized indoor mat competitions, making the sport more suitable for international events.

What is the History of Kabaddi?

Many fans ask: “What is the history of kabaddi?”

Kabaddi is believed to have originated in ancient India more than 4,000 years ago. References to battle formations and tactical movement similar to the sport appear in the Mahabharata, while different regional versions developed across the Indian subcontinent over centuries.

The sport took an important step toward modernization between 1918 and 1923, when standardized rules were introduced in Maharashtra.

In 1936, Kabaddi was demonstrated during events held alongside the Berlin Olympics, introducing the game to an international audience.

The formation of the All India Kabaddi Federation in 1950 further strengthened domestic competition before the breakthrough finally arrived at the 1990 Asian Games.

The sport entered another new era with the launch of the Pro Kabaddi League in 2014, bringing professional franchises, television audiences and global commercial appeal.

The Legacy of 1990

The Beijing Asian Games remain one of the most significant milestones in the history of global Kabaddi. Without official international recognition in 1990, the sport may have remained largely confined to South Asia.

Instead, the tournament opened the door for international competitions, encouraged the creation of new national teams and eventually paved the way for the formation of the International Kabaddi Federation and the modern Kabaddi World Cup.

More than three decades later, the impact of the 1990 Asian Games continues to shape Kabaddi’s journey as one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.
