In a significant breakthrough for the Batala double murder investigation, the Punjab Police have apprehended three primary suspects near the Indo-Bhutan border. The operation, led by the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF), targeted individuals allegedly associated with Harpreet Singh, a notorious overseas fugitive more commonly known as Happy Jat. This cross-border arrest was made possible through the combined efforts of central intelligence agencies, West Bengal authorities, and the Overseas Fugitive Tracking & Extradition Cell (OFTEC).
The underlying crime occurred on the outskirts of a village near Batala on April 27, when a group was ambushed by armed assailants on motorcycles. The violent encounter resulted in a tragic loss of life and critical injuries to survivors.
Details regarding the victims of the April 27 shooting include:
- Kashmir Singh (40): Fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene.
- Jugraj Singh (19): A talented local kabaddi athlete who was killed during the assault.
- Jugraj Singh (18): A third companion who survived the gunfire and is currently receiving medical care.
Investigations suggest that the hit was orchestrated by Happy Jat, a Jandiala Guru native who manages a sprawling criminal enterprise from abroad. He is currently facing over 20 counts of serious criminal activity, ranging from the distribution of narcotics via drones to high-profile targeted assassinations. While the three captured shooters are being transported back to Punjab for intensive questioning, the identities of the suspects have not yet been released to the public.
Authorities used a combination of advanced technical surveillance and a thorough analysis of CCTV footage to track the trio’s movement across several states. While these arrests represent a major victory for the AGTF, the search continues for a fourth suspect who remains at large. Police officials remain committed to uncovering the broader conspiracy and the specific motives that led to the targeted attack on the young athlete and his associates.
