The stage is set for a sun-soaked continental showdown as the draw for the 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China, was officially conducted by the organizing committee (SABGOC). Running from April 22 to 30, 2026, the event will see India competing in high-stakes Beach Kabaddi and Beach Handball fixtures.

While India opted out of the Beach Soccer competition, the nation remains a powerhouse in the sand-based versions of its traditional sports, with the Kabaddi squads entering as heavy favorites for the podium.

Beach Kabaddi: India’s Stronghold

The draw has been relatively kind to the Indian Kabaddi contingents, placing them in groups that offer a clear, though competitive, path to the knockout stages.

  • Men’s Team (Group B): India leads a balanced group featuring Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. Given India’s historical dominance in the circle and beach formats, they are expected to top this group.
  • Women’s Team (Group A): In a smaller, three-team pool, India faces Sri Lanka and Syria. This compact group structure significantly boosts India’s chances of early qualification for the semifinals.

Beach Handball: A Test of Endurance

The Handball draws present a much steeper climb, particularly for the men’s side, which faces a grueling schedule against some of Asia’s most established programs.

  • Men’s Team (Group A): This “Group of Death” features seven teams, including hosts China, regional giants Iran, and a formidable Bahrain side. India will need to maintain high consistency across a rapid-fire match schedule to advance.
  • Women’s Team (Group B): India will battle China, Turkmenistan, Sri Lanka, and Mongolia. While China and Turkmenistan are expected to provide stiff opposition, the group offers a manageable pathway if India can secure wins in their opening two fixtures.

Sanya 2026 will feature 14 sports and 63 events, serving as a vital mid-cycle assessment for Asian athletes ahead of the Nagoya Asian Games later this year. For India, the primary objective is clear: maintain total dominance in Beach Kabaddi and cause an upset in the highly competitive Beach Handball brackets.
