The Jaipur Pink Panthers 2014 Champions story remains one of the most memorable chapters in Indian sports history. Owned by Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan and coached by Kasinathan Baskaran, the team overcame an early setback to become the PKL Season 1 Champions, lifting the inaugural Pro Kabaddi League trophy in 2014.

A Difficult Start to the Season
The journey to the Jaipur Pink Panthers first PKL title did not begin as planned. On July 26, 2014, Jaipur featured in the very first Pro Kabaddi League match against home side U Mumba at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Indoor Stadium in Mumbai.
The Panthers suffered a heavy 45-31 defeat, raising early questions about their title chances.
However, coach Kasinathan Baskaran responded quickly by reorganising the team’s defensive strategy. Instead of relying on individual tackles, Jaipur adopted a coordinated chain defence led by Rohit Rana and Prashant Chavan, a move that transformed the team’s performances.
Dominating the League Stage
After their opening defeat, Jaipur bounced back in impressive fashion. They won 10 of their 14 league matches, losing only three while recording one tie.
The Panthers finished at the top of the standings with 54 points and a remarkable +100 score difference, proving themselves to be the strongest team of the regular season.
One of the biggest turning points came during the Kolkata and Delhi legs of the tournament. Jaipur secured convincing victories over Telugu Titans (46-32) and Dabang Delhi (40-31), with star raider Maninder Singh producing several match-winning performances.
The team’s home leg at the Sawai Mansingh Indoor Stadium also proved crucial. Backed by passionate home supporters, Jaipur won three of their four home matches to strengthen their position at the top of the table.
A Commanding Playoff Performance
Jaipur Pink Panthers 2014 Champions campaign continued in dominant fashion during the playoffs.
In the semifinal, they faced the Patna Pirates, led by experienced captain Rakesh Kumar. Jaipur’s defence delivered one of the best performances of the season, restricting Patna to just 18 points while securing a comfortable 38-18 victory to reach the final.
Winning the First PKL Title
The championship match brought a rematch against U Mumba, the team that had defeated Jaipur in the opening game of the season.
This time, the Panthers were fully prepared.
After leading 13-12 at halftime, Jaipur took complete control in the second half to record a convincing 35-24 victory, becoming the PKL Season 1 Champions.
One of the biggest moments came in the 11th minute when Jaipur forced an All Out to establish a 13-7 lead. Defender Prashant Chavan also produced a crucial solo tackle on U Mumba captain Anup Kumar just before halftime, shifting the momentum firmly in Jaipur’s favour.
Raiders Maninder Singh and Jasvir Singh dominated the closing stages, extending the lead and ensuring there would be no comeback.
The Heroes Behind the Historic Triumph
Captain Navneet Gautam provided calm leadership throughout the tournament, while Maninder Singh emerged as Jaipur’s leading raider with more than 130 raid points.
Jasvir Singh added valuable experience and tactical raids, while defenders Rohit Rana and Prashant Chavan formed one of the league’s strongest defensive partnerships. All-rounder Rajesh Narwal also played an important supporting role in several close matches.
This Jaipur Pink Panthers first PKL title not only made history but also helped establish the Pro Kabaddi League as a major sporting competition in India. Their remarkable journey from opening-day defeat to lifting the trophy remains one of the greatest comeback stories in PKL history.
