Why PKL Teams Must Invest in Young Players

The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) has changed significantly since its launch in 2014. In the early years, teams relied heavily on experienced stars to deliver success. However, the modern game demands much more than individual brilliance. Today, youth development in Pro Kabaddi has become one of the biggest factors behind successful franchises.

From managing player fitness to building financially balanced squads, investing in young talent has proven to be the smartest long-term strategy. This also answers an important question: why young players matter in PKL.

The modern game demands younger players

Kabaddi is now faster and more physically demanding than ever before.

A PKL season requires players to compete in more than 20 matches within a short period. Younger athletes generally recover faster between games, allowing them to maintain their speed, agility, and defensive intensity throughout the tournament.

They are also better equipped to handle the physical challenges of repeated raids, tackles, and high-pressure situations.

This is one of the biggest reasons why young players matter in PKL. Teams with energetic young players are often able to maintain consistent performances throughout the season.

Youth development creates stronger squads

Another major advantage of youth development in Pro Kabaddi is financial flexibility.

The league operates under a salary cap, meaning teams must spend their budgets wisely. Investing heavily in one or two superstar players often leaves little money to strengthen the rest of the squad.

The PKL’s New Young Players (NYP) program gives franchises the opportunity to recruit talented youngsters at affordable salaries. These cost-effective signings allow teams to build balanced squads with quality substitutes instead of relying only on expensive stars.

If a senior player suffers an injury, a well-developed young player can step in without significantly weakening the team.

Successful teams have shown the way

Recent champions have demonstrated the value of developing young talent.

Puneri Paltan built their title-winning squad around players who progressed through the club’s Yuva Paltan system. Stars such as Aslam Inamdar, Mohit Goyat, and Gaurav Khatri developed together, creating excellent teamwork and understanding on the mat.

Similarly, Haryana Steelers focused on growing young defenders rather than entering costly bidding wars for established stars. Their approach helped them become one of the strongest teams in the league.

These examples clearly show why young players matter in PKL.

Which is the weakest team in PKL?

Many fans wonder which is the weakest team in PKL. Historically, Telugu Titans have struggled more than any other franchise. Between Seasons 8 and 10, they managed only five wins in 66 matches, making it one of the toughest periods for any PKL team.

One major reason for their struggles was an over-reliance on expensive star players without building a balanced squad around them. While marquee signings attracted attention, the lack of investment in young defenders and squad depth often hurt the team’s performances.

The future belongs to youth

Modern PKL success is no longer built solely around superstar raiders. Instead, championships are increasingly won by teams with balanced squads, strong academies, and talented young players ready to step up when needed.

That is why youth development in Pro Kabaddi has become essential for every franchise. Teams that invest in the next generation today are far more likely to enjoy sustained success in the future. As recent seasons have shown, why young players matter in PKL is no longer a debate but a proven formula for long-term success.
