Organised by World Kabaddi in partnership with the Pan America Kabaddi Association, the Canada Kabaddi Alliance and the USA Kabaddi Association, the tournament is expected to play a major role in expanding the sport’s global reach. The road to Kabaddi World Cup 2027 is already underway, with several key tournaments and development programmes preparing teams for the biggest event on the international calendar.
A Historic Step for Global Kabaddi
Hosting the World Cup in Canada is more than just a venue change. It represents a strategic move to introduce kabaddi to new audiences and strengthen the sport’s presence across North America.
With large South Asian communities in both Canada and the United States, organisers hope the event will attract big crowds while also inspiring local athletes to take up the sport.
The long-term objective extends beyond a successful tournament. World Kabaddi views the 2027 World Cup as an important step in its efforts to gain recognition for future Olympic Games inclusion.
Building the Foundation
Several initiatives have already been launched to prepare North America for hosting the tournament.
The Canada Kabaddi National Championship (CKNC) has become the country’s premier domestic competition, providing a pathway for talented players to reach the national team.
At the same time, the Kabaddi Rising Stars League (KRSL) and the Kabaddi PanAm Elite League are helping develop players across the Americas. These competitions feature experienced athletes from India, England, Argentina and the United States competing alongside local talent, raising the standard of competition across the region.
International Kabaddi Calendar Before 2027
The International Kabaddi Calendar features several major events before the World Cup arrives in Canada.
The journey begins with the Junior World Championship in Isfahan, Iran, from June 5 to June 11, 2026. The tournament will showcase many of the world’s best young players and provide a glimpse of future international stars.
Attention then shifts to the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, scheduled for September 21 to September 26, 2026. India will aim to defend its titles against strong challenges from Iran, South Korea and other Asian nations.
The Commonwealth Championship will be held in Ahmedabad from October 10 to October 18, 2026, followed by the 6th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Riyadh between November 28 and December 7.
Continental qualifying tournaments will then take place in early 2027 across Europe, Africa and Pan America to determine the remaining places for the World Cup.
The Race for the Title
India will once again enter the Kabaddi World Cup 2027 as the team to beat. Their remarkable success at previous World Cups and Asian Games makes them favourites to defend their title.
However, the competition is becoming increasingly competitive. Iran continue to establish themselves as India’s biggest rivals, while England have shown significant progress after pushing India in recent international competitions. Chinese Taipei have also emerged as a disciplined and organised side capable of challenging the traditional powers.
Host nations Canada and the United States could also benefit from home support and improved domestic structures, making them dangerous opponents on familiar courts.
