Team Nigeria set for 4th Africa Kabaddi Championship, calls for support

The Nigeria Kabaddi Sports Association (NKSA) has confirmed its preparations for the upcoming 4th Africa Kabaddi Championship, which will take place in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, between June 20 and 28, 2026. This continental showdown carries significant weight, as it functions as a primary qualification route for the World Cup. National athletes have already entered intensive training camps, with officials expressing immense confidence in the squad’s ability to secure a spot on the global stage.

Godfrey Osakwe, the Association’s President, highlighted the sport’s rapid global expansion and its unique ability to unite diverse cultures through athletic diplomacy. He argued that the success of the national team would serve as a powerful testament to the country’s rising sporting profile.

To ensure a successful campaign, the NKSA is seeking assistance in the following areas:

  • Financial sponsorships to cover travel, accommodation, and athlete insurance.
  • Material contributions for high-quality kits and training equipment.
  • Logistical partnerships to manage the movement of officials and players.
  • Nutritional and medical support for the duration of the intensive training camp.

Osakwe described the sport as a vital tool for youth empowerment and national pride, urging the private sector and philanthropic individuals to invest in this burgeoning discipline. He noted that corporate backing is essential to handle the complexities of international competition. “Sports remains a veritable platform for youth empowerment, national unity, and international engagement. Supporting Team Nigeria is an investment in the future of our youths and the growth of emerging sports in the country,” Osakwe stated.

Rooted in ancient Indian traditions, Kabaddi has transformed into a globally recognized contact sport that tests both endurance and strategy. The game involves a “raider” crossing into the rival team’s territory to tag defenders while holding their breath and repeating a specific chant. Points are awarded based on successful tags or defensive tackles, with the most tactical and physically resilient team claiming victory.

The NKSA remains dedicated to fostering the sport’s growth within Nigeria’s borders and creating pathways for local talent to reach professional heights. By calling upon government agencies and patriotic citizens, the Association hopes to provide Team Nigeria with the resources necessary to dominate the African circuit and bring home a World Cup berth.
