AKFI Begins Intensive Preparation for Asian Games 2026

The Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) has stepped up its preparations for the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. With the prestigious event scheduled for September 2026, the federation is working quickly to identify the best players who can help India achieve success on the continental stage.

The focus on Asian Games kabaddi preparation comes at a crucial time. India’s women’s team aims to defend its title, while the men’s team is eager to reclaim complete dominance after recent challenges from strong rivals such as Iran.

To achieve these goals, AKFI has introduced a faster and more structured selection process.

90 Players Attend Elite Base Camp

The first major step in the AKFI National Camp selection process was a seven-day Strength and Conditioning Camp at the Inspire Institute of Sport in Bellary.

A total of 90 players were selected for the camp, including 45 men and 45 women. These players were chosen from across the country based on their performances in major competitions.

The camp allowed coaches and selectors to evaluate fitness levels, physical strength, and overall readiness for international competition.

From this group, only 14 men and 14 women will eventually make the final squads for the Asian Games.

Star Players in the Selection Pool

The men’s group features some of the biggest names in Indian kabaddi. Raiders such as Pawan Sehrawat, Naveen Kumar, Arjun Deshwal, Ashu Malik, and Aslam Inamdar are among the leading contenders.

Young talents including Devank Dalal and Ayan Lohchab have also been included, giving selectors more options for the future.

On the women’s side, captain Ritu Negi leads an experienced group. Key players such as Sonali Vishnu Shingate, Pushpa Rana, Champa Thakur, Pinki Roy, Priya, and Karthika R are all part of the selection process.

Their presence highlights the seriousness of the Asian Games kabaddi camp and the federation’s determination to build strong squads.

New Data-Driven Selection Policy

A major change in the AKFI National Camp selection process is the introduction of a transparent and performance based system.

Under the new policy, player selection will depend on four key areas:

  • Exceptional performances in important matches
  • Consistent results over the past year
  • Strong previous records at major events
  • Fitness levels and discipline standards

The federation wants to ensure that every player is selected on merit and performance rather than reputation alone.

Match data from the Senior National Championships, Senior Federation Cup, and Pro Kabaddi League will play an important role in the evaluation process.

Importance of the Asian Games Kabaddi Camp

The upcoming Asian Games kabaddi camp will focus on teamwork, match situations, and tactical preparation.

For the first time, AKFI will also create a reserve list of three to five players. These reserves will train alongside the main squad and remain ready if injuries or unexpected issues arise before the tournament.

This approach provides additional security and flexibility for the coaching staff.

Road Ahead for Team India

The ongoing Asian Games kabaddi preparation reflects AKFI’s commitment to success in Nagoya. The federation understands that competition is becoming tougher, with Iran, South Korea, and Japan all improving rapidly.

By accelerating the AKFI National Camp selection process and focusing on detailed preparation, India hopes to arrive in Japan with its strongest possible squads.

The journey to Nagoya has begun, and every decision made over the coming months could play a vital role in India’s quest for kabaddi glory.
