Pro Kabaddi League has completely changed the image of kabaddi in India. What was once seen as a rural sport played on mud courts is now one of the biggest sporting leagues in the country. Packed stadiums, television coverage, social media clips, and digital storytelling have helped kabaddi become a modern entertainment product.

The rise of PKL is one of the best examples of how Indian sports have evolved over the last decade.

How was the game of kabaddi developed?

Kabaddi is one of India’s oldest traditional sports. It was originally played in villages to improve strength, stamina, and self defense skills. Different regions followed different rules, and the sport mainly remained a local outdoor activity for many years.

The game slowly became more organized in the early 20th century. Kabaddi even appeared as a demonstration sport in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Later, it became an official medal sport at the Asian Games in 1990.

However, the real turning point came in 2014 when PKL was launched. The league transformed kabaddi into a fast paced indoor sport with colorful mats, bright jerseys, and television friendly rules.

The 30 second raid clock reduced delays, do or die raids increased pressure, and super tackles added excitement. These changes made the game easier to watch and more entertaining for modern audiences.

Who made PKL famous?

The success of PKL was not accidental. It was carefully built through strong marketing and digital media planning.

Mashal Sports and Star Sports played the biggest role in making kabaddi popular across India. They presented the sport like a major entertainment event with dramatic camera angles, slow motion replays, and energetic commentary.

Celebrity team owners also helped bring attention to the league. Abhishek Bachchan, owner of Jaipur Pink Panthers, became one of the faces of the competition and attracted mainstream audiences.

Social media platforms then pushed the sport even further. Viral highlights, player interviews, memes, and behind the scenes videos helped fans connect with players on a personal level.

Who is the most popular player in kabaddi?

Digital media helped turn kabaddi players into national stars. Nicknames and online branding made them more memorable among fans.

Rahul Chaudhari became the original poster boy of PKL and helped make kabaddi fashionable among younger audiences.

Pardeep Narwal, known as the Dubki King, is widely considered the most popular player in kabaddi history because of his record breaking raid points and iconic playing style.

Modern stars like Pawan Sehrawat and Naveen Kumar continue to carry the league forward with massive fan followings online.

What is the salary of Ashu Malik in PKL?

The commercial growth of kabaddi can also be seen in player salaries. During the PKL Season 12 auction, Dabang Delhi K.C. retained Ashu Malik for ₹1.90 crore using the Final Bid Match rule.

This made him one of the highest paid players in the league and showed how valuable star raiders have become in modern kabaddi.

How Indian sports have evolved

Kabaddi’s rise reflects the bigger change happening in Indian sports. For many years, cricket dominated television and sponsorship deals. But franchise leagues have now created opportunities in multiple sports.

Leagues like PKL have given athletes financial security, national fame, and digital visibility. Today, kabaddi players are not just athletes. They are social media stars, brand ambassadors, and sporting icons followed by millions across India.
