Pro Kabaddi League controversies have been an important part of the competition’s history. Across 12 seasons, the league has witnessed heated arguments over refereeing decisions, rule changes, timekeeping errors and disagreements between players, coaches and team management.
Some incidents have gone beyond individual matches and even resulted in changes to the rules. Here are five of the biggest controversies in PKL history, including some of the biggest moments from PKL 12.
1. Tamil Thalaivas Fallout and Pawan Sehrawat’s Exit
The biggest of the PKL 12 controversies involved Tamil Thalaivas captain Pawan Sehrawat. The star raider was sent home after only three matches, with the franchise citing disciplinary issues and violations of its code of conduct.
Sehrawat rejected the allegations and claimed internal politics were behind his removal. The controversy became even bigger after head coach Sanjeev Baliyan and interim captain Arjun Deshwal questioned the team’s management and alleged that an analyst had influence over the starting seven.
Tamil Thalaivas denied the claims, but Baliyan was eventually sacked after the season.
2. Mohammad Nabibakhsh and the Lobby Rule
One of the most important Pro Kabaddi League controversies happened in Season 8 during a match between Bengal Warriors and Bengaluru Bulls.
Bengal’s Mohammad Nabibakhsh entered the lobby without making a touch, after which Bengaluru defenders followed him. Under the rules at that time, the defenders entering the lobby were also considered out. Bengal were awarded six points, leading to strong protests from Bengaluru.
The controversy eventually resulted in a change to the lobby rule. The raid would now be considered dead when a raider entered the lobby without a touch, with only the raider being declared out.
3. Bengal Warriorz and Dabang Delhi Timekeeping Drama
PKL 12 also produced a major controversy involving the official match clock. Bengal Warriorz were leading Dabang Delhi 37 to 36 when a late raid created confusion over whether there was still time remaining.
The timer reached zero and the game was initially declared over. Officials then reversed the decision and said one second remained before reversing it again and confirming Bengal’s victory.
The repeated changes created furious reactions from the Delhi camp and raised questions about timekeeping and communication between the officials and technical desk.
4. Ajinkya Pawar’s Unblown Whistle Raid
Another controversial moment came during the Season 9 match between Tamil Thalaivas and Telugu Titans. Ajinkya Pawar appeared to have been successfully tackled, causing the Titans defenders to relax.
However, the referee had not blown the whistle to end the raid. Pawar escaped and crossed the mid line, earning multiple points. Telugu Titans protested the decision, arguing that their players believed the play had already stopped.
The incident highlighted the importance of clear referee signals during crucial moments.
5. Bonus Line and Review Disputes
The use of video reviews also created several PKL 12 controversies and wider debates during Seasons 10 and 11. Coaches questioned some bonus line decisions when slow motion footage failed to provide a completely clear answer.
There were also complaints when teams had already used their reviews and could not challenge important decisions late in matches. These incidents increased calls for better technology, including automated systems for tracking the bonus line.
The five incidents show how the biggest controversies in PKL history have involved much more than player disagreements. From rule changes and refereeing decisions to management disputes and timekeeping problems, these moments have influenced how the league is played and managed.
