Iranian kabaddi star Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh has issued an open challenge to the Indian men’s kabaddi team ahead of the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The powerful all-rounder and left corner defender has made it clear that Iran wants to reclaim the Asian Games gold medal after losing to India in the controversial final at Hangzhou.

The comments add further intensity to one of the biggest rivalries in international kabaddi. The Mohammadreza Shadloui Asian Games 2026 storyline will be closely followed as India and Iran prepare for another potential meeting on the biggest Asian stage.

India and Iran Rivalry

India and Iran have developed one of the strongest rivalries in international kabaddi. At the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, India defeated Iran 33-29 in a closely fought final to win the gold medal.

The match was filled with tension and controversy, but India’s victory allowed them to reclaim the Asian Games title. Iran, however, have a strong history against India at the tournament.

At the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, Iran defeated India in the semi-final before going on to win their first-ever Asian Games gold medal. The upcoming tournament therefore gives Iran an opportunity to respond to their defeat in Hangzhou.

Shadloui Leads Iran’s Challenge

Shadloui is one of the most feared all-rounders in world kabaddi. His strength, defensive ability and aggressive approach have made him a major figure in international and professional kabaddi.

He is also the record overseas signing in Pro Kabaddi League history, highlighting his value in the sport. His challenge to India reflects Iran’s confidence ahead of the tournament and underlines their desire to target India’s raiding unit.

A potential Iran vs India kabaddi clash could feature an important individual battle between Shadloui and India’s leading raiders, including Pawan Sehrawat and Arjun Deshwal.

Shadloui’s ankle holds and diving defensive moves will be particularly important against India’s right sided raiders. India will need to find ways to avoid allowing the Iranian defender to establish control early in a match.

Asian Games Kabaddi Format

The kabaddi competition at the 2026 Asian Games will take place from September 21 to September 26 at the Tokai Citizens Gymnasium in Aichi Prefecture.

India have been placed in Group A alongside Bangladesh, South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Japan. Iran are in Group B with Pakistan, Malaysia, Nepal and Thailand.

The two major contenders have therefore been separated during the group stage. This means India and Iran are expected to meet only in the knockout rounds, potentially in the semi final or gold medal match on September 26.

India’s squad includes experienced players such as Pawan Sehrawat, Aslam Inamdar, Ashu Malik, Arjun Deshwal and captain Sunil Kumar. Iran will be led by veteran Fazel Atrachali, with Shadloui and other experienced players forming a strong core.

Experience vs New Generation

Iran are expected to rely heavily on experience, with seven players from their Hangzhou squad retained. Atrachali, who is 34, remains an important leader for the team.

India, meanwhile, have combined established stars with several debutants. The new generation will be expected to handle the physical intensity and pressure that usually comes with an India Iran contest.

The latest Mohammadreza Shadloui latest news has added another layer to an already fierce rivalry. If the two teams meet in the final, Shadloui will have the opportunity to back up his words against India’s strongest raiders.

With the gold medal likely to be the ultimate target for both sides, an India Iran meeting could once again become one of the biggest sporting contests of the 2026 Asian Games.
