Circle Style vs Standard Kabaddi: Rules, Scoring and Key Differences
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Kabaddi is played in different formats across India and around the world, but Standard Style and Circle Style kabaddi have major differences in their rules and gameplay. Both formats involve a raider entering the opposition’s territory and trying to score, but the way raids, tackles and points work is very different.

Circle style kabaddi vs standard kabaddi comparison focuses on these differences. Standard Style is the format seen at the Asian Games, Pro Kabaddi League and international competitions, while Circle Style is traditionally associated with Punjabi kabaddi and is played on a large circular outdoor field.

Difference Between Circle Kabaddi and Standard Kabaddi

The biggest difference between circle kabaddi and standard kabaddi is the structure of the playing area and the number of defenders involved in a tackle.

Standard kabaddi is played on a rectangular court, with seven active players on each side. Circle Style uses a circular playing area with a radius of around 22 metres and has eight active stoppers. Standard matches are usually played on synthetic mats or packed clay, while Circle Style is commonly played on grass, soft earth or sand.

The two formats also have different defensive systems. In Standard Style, multiple defenders can tackle the same raider at the same time. In Circle Style, the raider selects one stopper, known as a jaffi, and the contest becomes a one-on-one battle.

Circle Kabaddi Rules Explained

The Circle kabaddi rules are built around individual contests rather than team tackles. The eight stoppers stand around the circular playing area, and the raider enters through a central opening known as the pala.

After crossing the pala, the raider chooses a stopper. From that moment, only that stopper can challenge the raider. If another defender touches the raider during the contest, a foul can be called and the point awarded to the raider.

There are also no baulk or bonus lines in Circle Style. Instead, the raider must enter and return through the designated central area within the 30-second raid period.

Standard Kabaddi Rules Explained

The Standard kabaddi rules involve several features that are not present in Circle Style. A raider must cross the baulk line to validate a raid, while a bonus point can be available when the required number of defenders are on court.

Standard Style also allows all defenders to work together. Corners, covers and other defensive positions can combine ankle holds, thigh holds, dashes and other tackles to stop the raider.

Another major difference is the revival system. Players who are dismissed can return to the court after their team scores through successful raids or tackles. Catching all seven opponents results in an All Out and gives the successful team two additional points.

Scoring and Gameplay Differences

Circle Style does not use the same revival or All Out system. Players remain on the field after conceding points, meaning every raid continues with the complete defensive unit available.

In Standard Style, a raid can finish without a point, while repeated empty raids can eventually lead to a Do-or-Die raid. Circle Style gives every raid a direct opportunity to score through either a successful raid or defensive stop.

Physical Demands

Standard Kabaddi generally rewards agile and explosive players who can use quick movements and flexibility to escape defenders. Circle Style places greater emphasis on physical strength, grip power and wrestling techniques.

This makes the Circle style kabaddi vs standard kabaddi comparison more than a difference in court shape. The two formats require different tactical approaches, defensive skills and physical qualities, while retaining the basic raider versus defender contest at the heart of kabaddi.
