For many years, raiders were seen as the biggest stars in kabaddi. Fans mostly talked about big raid points, super raids, and match winning attacks. But in recent seasons, the story has started to change. The rise of young Indian defenders in kabaddi has become one of the biggest talking points in the Pro Kabaddi League.

Players like Ankush Rathee and Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh are proving that defenders are now just as important as star raiders. Many experts even believe defenders have become the real game changers in modern kabaddi.

Defenders now getting massive auction value

Earlier, most franchises spent huge money only on raiders. But teams have now realized that weak defending can destroy title hopes.

This change became very clear with Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh. The Iranian star became one of the most expensive defenders in PKL history after earning massive contracts from top teams. Gujarat Giants reportedly spent ₹2.23 crore to sign him.

Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh tackle points numbers show why teams value him so highly. He crossed 391 tackle points in just 109 matches and holds one of the best tackle success records in league history.

This has created a huge debate among fans asking, “Is Mohammad Shadloui Chiyaneh the best defender in PKL?” Many experts believe he is currently among the most complete all round defenders in the world because of his ability to tackle, raid, and control match tempo.

Ankush Rathee becoming a defensive superstar

Another player who has changed the game is Ankush Rathee.

After shining for Jaipur Pink Panthers, Ankush became a key leader for Bengaluru Bulls. His calm defending style and strong ankle holds have made him one of the toughest defenders to beat.

Ankush Rathee tackle points statistics are already impressive. He has collected more than 232 tackle points in just 71 matches along with 20 High 5 performances.

Fans also continue searching, “How much did Ankush Rathee sell for?” because his value has rapidly increased after his strong performances in recent PKL seasons.

Questions like “What happened between Ankush and Bengaluru Bulls?” also became popular after his move into a leadership role during the rebuilding phase of the franchise.

Modern kabaddi now depends on defenders

Modern kabaddi has become faster and more tactical. Raiders are now stronger, quicker, and smarter than before. Because of this, defenders also had to improve their skills and techniques.

Top coaches now focus heavily on building defensive systems instead of depending only on one superstar raider. Defenders are especially important during do or die raids where one successful tackle can completely change the momentum of a match.

Elite corner defenders now force raiders to take risks and make mistakes under pressure.

New Young Players rule helping Indian talent

Many fans are also asking, “How does the “New Young Players” (NYP) rule influence the rise of young Indian players in kabaddi?”

The answer is simple. The NYP rule has given franchises more chances to scout and develop young defenders from local tournaments and junior competitions. Teams are now investing in raw Indian talent much earlier than before.

This has helped several young defenders earn opportunities in PKL and grow into future stars.

Defenders are now the real match winners

Kabaddi is no longer only about raiders scoring points. Teams with strong defensive units are now winning more titles and controlling games better.

Players like Ankush Rathee and Mohammadreza Shadloui have shown that elite defenders can completely change matches with discipline, smart tactics, and pressure defending.

As PKL continues to grow, defenders are no longer supporting players. They are now becoming the biggest stars of modern kabaddi.
