The Global Pravasi Kabaddi League (GPKL) has announced a major strategic shift for its upcoming second season, introducing a structured player draft designed to integrate domestic Indian stars with international “Pravasi” athletes. In a significant move for gender equality in the sport, the league also confirmed that every franchise will now field both a men’s and a women’s team.
This season aims to bridge the gap between India’s traditional kabaddi dominance and the sport’s growing footprint in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Season 2 will move away from traditional recruitment, opting for a professional draft pool to ensure parity across all franchises.
- The Dual-Team Mandate: Every franchise in the GPKL will be responsible for a men’s squad and a women’s squad, promoting parallel growth for both genders.
- The “Pravasi” Quotient: Squads must be a mix of Indian domestic players and international athletes. This ensures that global players gain experience from the world’s best while Indian players adapt to diverse styles.
- Rigorous Scouting: Before entering the draft, athletes must clear trials assessing technical ability, fitness, and tactical awareness.
Global Participation: From Europe to Africa
The league has confirmed participation from a diverse range of nations, turning the GPKL into a truly international melting pot.
| Continent | Participating Nations |
| Europe | England, Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Germany |
| Africa | Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon |
| Asia | Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Domestic India |
The Vision: Creating Global Ambassodors
The “Pravasi” (overseas) element is more than just a recruitment strategy; it is a tool for global expansion. According to HIPSA President Kanthi D Suresh, international players act as spokespeople who carry the sport back to their home countries, creating a natural pathway for kabaddi to reach new audiences.
“Each player coming from a foreign country does not just participate in the league; they become a spokesperson for the sport when they return home.”
— Kanthi D Suresh, HIPSA President
