After overcoming a grueling physical setback, Indian kabaddi sensation Ashu Malik has officially turned his focus toward international dominance. The captain of Dabang Delhi is eager to swap his franchise kit for the national jersey as he prepares for the upcoming Asian Games. Currently participating in a high-intensity national camp at the Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS) in Bellary, Malik reflected on his arduous journey from a small-town raider to a national icon.

The five-day training sessions, organized by the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI), wrap up this Thursday, April 2. For the 24-year-old Malik, who recently steered Dabang Delhi to the 2025 Pro Kabaddi League title, the motivation is simple: legacy. He mentioned that “Wearing ‘India’ on your back is every player’s dream,” emphasizing that the squad is putting in the work to ensure they stand on the podium at the World Cup and the Asian Games.

Key Highlights from Ashu Malik’s Comeback Journey:

  • Injury Recovery: Successfully bounced back from a painful ankle and tendon injury sustained during a high-stakes match against the Haryana Steelers.
  • Facility Praise: Highlighted the world-class infrastructure at IIS Bellary as a game-changer for modern athlete conditioning.
  • Youth Mentorship: Applauded the AKFI for inviting 18-to-19-year-old prospects to the camp, ensuring a strong future pipeline for the sport.
  • The Full Circle: Noted the shift from idolizing legends like Pardeep Narwal on TV to becoming the veteran that today’s teenagers look up to.

The path back to full health wasn’t easy for the Sonepat native. During the previous PKL season, Malik was forced to play through significant pain using support taping before finally taking a necessary three-month hiatus to heal. He confirmed that by the end of January, he had reached 100% fitness, allowing him to train without limitations during this week’s elite camp.

While Malik is often the face of his team’s success, he was quick to credit the collective grit of his Dabang Delhi teammates for their recent trophy. He highlighted the blend of veteran leadership from stars like Fazel Atrachali and Surjeet Singh alongside the raw energy of younger players like Neeraj Narwal. Moving forward, his vision is singular and uncompromising: securing a gold medal for India in Japan.
