The second season of the Uttar Pradesh Kabaddi League, popularly known as UPKL, proved that regional sporting competitions can become major success stories. The tournament concluded in January 2026 with Kashi Kings lifting the championship trophy at the Noida Indoor Stadium. More importantly, it showcased how a state level competition can create a lasting impact on the sport.

From increased viewership to stronger grassroots development, the league established itself as one of the most successful regional sports leagues in India.

UPKL Season 2 Review: Bigger and Better Than Ever

Any UPKL season 2 review begins with the remarkable growth of the tournament. The league expanded from eight franchises to 12 city-based teams, bringing more players, more matches, and greater fan engagement.

New teams such as Kanpur Warriors, Aligarh Tigers, Purvanchal Panthers, and Gazab Ghaziabad added fresh excitement to the competition. The arrival of Bollywood actor Tusshar Kapoor as a co-owner of Gazab Ghaziabad also brought additional attention and credibility to the league.

The expansion helped create stronger local rivalries and increased support from fans across Uttar Pradesh. Each franchise represented a city and built a connection with local communities, making the tournament more than just a sporting event.

Viewership Growth Shows Massive Popularity

One of the biggest highlights of the season was its impressive television reach. Through its partnership with Zee Entertainment Enterprises, UPKL Season 2 reached millions of viewers across the country.

The tournament attracted a cumulative audience of 40 million viewers, a huge jump from the 18.2 million viewers recorded during the first season. This represented a growth of 120 percent and demonstrated the increasing popularity of kabaddi at the regional level.

The strong viewership numbers proved that fans are eager to watch high-quality regional competitions when they are professionally presented and easily accessible.

Raising the Standard of Competition

The quality of kabaddi also improved significantly during the season. Players benefited from better coaching, professional facilities, and increased exposure.

One of the most memorable moments came during the historic match between Lucknow Lions and Gazab Ghaziabad. The game finished with a record-breaking score of 87-36 and showcased the attacking potential of modern kabaddi.

Lucknow Lions star Shivam Chaudhary became the biggest talking point after scoring an incredible 43 raid points in a single match. His performance set a new benchmark for players competing in regional leagues.

These moments highlighted how regional competitions can help talented athletes develop and prepare for higher levels of the sport.

Impact of UPKL on Indian Kabaddi

The long term impact of UPKL on Indian kabaddi could be significant. For many years, there was a large gap between grassroots competitions and professional leagues. UPKL has helped bridge that gap by creating a platform where emerging players can showcase their skills.

Strong performances in the league can attract attention from scouts and open pathways to bigger opportunities. This makes UPKL an important stepping stone for young athletes.

The league has also shown how local identity can drive fan engagement. Supporters proudly backed teams representing their cities, creating passionate rivalries and strong community connections.

A Blueprint for Regional Sports Leagues in India

The success of UPKL Season 2 offers valuable lessons for other regional sports leagues in India. It proved that regional competitions can be commercially successful, attract large audiences, and help develop future stars.

As the league plans to expand into more cities in future seasons, its influence is expected to grow even further. This UPKL season 2 review confirms that the competition has not only strengthened kabaddi in Uttar Pradesh but has also become a model for the future of Indian sports.
