In a significant boost to the athletic department of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), sports coach Balbir Singh has officially earned his National Certification in Kabaddi coaching. This achievement highlights the university’s commitment to professionalizing its sports programs and preserving traditional Indian athletics.

The certification was awarded following an intensive program at the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) Southern Centre in Bengaluru, one of the country’s premier training hubs for elite coaching.

Key Details of the Certification

  • Institution: Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NS NIS), Southern Centre.
  • Program: National Certification Course in Sports Coaching (under the Mass Sports Participation Programme).
  • Focus Areas: Technical skill refinement, advanced tactical strategies, and injury prevention in Kabaddi.
  • Participation: A competitive selection of coaches from across various Indian states and Union Territories.

The Vice-Chancellor of SMVDU, Prof. Pragati Kumar, personally congratulated Balbir Singh on the accomplishment. According to the university administration, having a nationally certified coach is a cornerstone of their strategy to:

  1. Enhance Talent Scouting: Identifying high-potential student-athletes from the Jammu and Kashmir region.
  2. Elevate Competition Standards: Preparing the university team for inter-university and national-level championships with modern tactical insights.
  3. Promote Traditional Sports: Integrating indigenous sports into the holistic development framework for students.

Why NS NIS Certification Matters

The NS NIS Bengaluru center is renowned for its high standards and rigorous testing. Balbir Singh’s success in this program ensures that SMVDU athletes will now be trained under the same pedagogical frameworks used by national-level training camps.

This development is particularly timely, as the demand for professional coaching in Kabaddi has surged following the continued success of the Pro Kabaddi League and the inclusion of Kabaddi in major domestic multi-sport clusters.
