How Successful Was IPKL 2026? Full Tournament Review and Analysis
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The International Premier Kabaddi League (IPKL) 2026 represented an important experiment for the global growth of kabaddi. Staged at Sportcampus Zuiderpark in The Hague, Netherlands, the tournament attempted to take professional standard style kabaddi beyond its traditional markets and introduce the sport to a wider European audience.

With men’s and women’s franchise competitions running alongside each other, the IPKL 2026 offered more than just a new tournament. It tested whether a privately organised franchise model could create interest, opportunities and a sustainable pathway for players outside India’s established kabaddi ecosystem.

European Expansion Was a Major Success

One of the biggest achievements of the tournament was its location. Holding the competition in the Netherlands gave kabaddi a professional platform in mainland Europe.

The participation of European based franchises such as Oslo Nordic Wolves and Copenhagen Thunder Vikings alongside experienced Asian players helped create a genuine international environment.

For European athletes, competing alongside established kabaddi players provided valuable experience. It also allowed local audiences to watch professional kabaddi in a format that is still relatively unfamiliar in many parts of the continent.

This geographical expansion could prove important if organisers want to develop more leagues and competitions across Europe in the future.

Men’s and Women’s Competitions Created Greater Opportunities

Another important feature was the inclusion of both men’s and women’s franchise competitions.

Teams such as Delhi Diamond Women and Budapest Mighty Bulls Women gave female players an opportunity to compete in a professional franchise environment. Running the two competitions together also helped promote greater visibility for women’s kabaddi.

This approach can be particularly valuable for emerging players who need regular high level matches to develop their skills and gain international exposure.

The model therefore went beyond simply staging matches. It attempted to create a broader professional pathway for players from different countries.

Strategic Impact of IPKL 2026

The strategic impact of the International Premier Kabaddi League (IPKL) 2026 can be measured through three major areas: geographical expansion, player development and commercial experimentation.

The tournament showed that professional kabaddi can be organised outside India while bringing together players from different regions.

It also tested the potential of a private franchise competition in a market where kabaddi does not have the same established audience as India.

Founder Sohan Tusir’s model effectively challenged the idea that professional kabaddi must remain concentrated around the Indian Pro Kabaddi League ecosystem.

However, long term success will depend on factors such as audience growth, sponsorship, broadcasting reach, franchise stability and the ability to hold regular editions.

Which Country Is Most Successful in Kabaddi?

The question Which country is most successful in kabaddi? has a clear answer: India.

India has dominated international kabaddi across major formats. The country won all three standard style men’s World Cups in 2004, 2007 and 2016, while also remaining undefeated in the women’s World Cup editions listed in the research.

India has also won eight men’s Asian Games gold medals and three women’s Asian Games gold medals. In circle style kabaddi, India has won six World Cup titles.

Several factors explain this dominance. Kabaddi has deep historical and cultural roots in India, while the country also has a huge grassroots player base.

The Pro Kabaddi League has further strengthened the professional ecosystem by giving elite players regular high level competition and providing young athletes with a pathway towards professional careers.

Iran remains India’s strongest challenger in standard style kabaddi, while Pakistan is a major force in circle style competition.

Final Verdict

The IPKL 2026 should be viewed as a promising first step rather than a finished global product.

Its biggest success was demonstrating that professional franchise kabaddi can operate in Europe while providing opportunities to both male and female players.

If the organisers can build on the first edition with stronger broadcasting, larger audiences, more European participation and a stable annual calendar, the league could become an important part of kabaddi’s international growth.

For now, the International Premier Kabaddi League (IPKL) 2026 has successfully opened a new door for the sport outside its traditional heartlands.
