The Patna Pirates have built one of the strongest legacies in Pro Kabaddi League history, winning three consecutive titles and producing several elite defenders. From top stars to Indian defensive leaders, the franchise has had no shortage of players capable of changing matches with their tackling ability.
However, when it comes to identifying the Patna Pirates best defender, Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh stands above the rest. His incredible numbers, individual records and impact across multiple seasons make him the strongest candidate for the greatest defender in Patna history.
Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh: The Ultimate Match Winner
Shadloui arrived in the PKL during Season 8 and immediately became one of the league’s most feared defenders.
The Iranian left-corner scored 89 tackle points during his debut season in 2021-22. That outstanding campaign earned him the Best Defender of the Season award and helped Patna Pirates reach the final.
His impact became even greater in Season 9.
Shadloui produced one of the greatest defensive performances in PKL history when he scored 16 tackle points in a single match against Dabang Delhi KC. His incredible performance included eight Super Tackles, setting the record for the highest individual tackle point tally in a single PKL match.
Across his two seasons with Patna, Shadloui accumulated 173 tackle points. That combination of consistency and match-winning ability puts him at the top of the list of Patna Pirates defenders.
Fazel Atrachali: The Title Architect
Fazel Atrachali is another name that cannot be ignored when discussing the best defender Patna Pirates have produced.
The legendary Iranian played only one season for Patna, but his impact was enormous. During Season 4, Atrachali scored 52 tackle points and won the Best Defender of the Season award.
More importantly, his defensive leadership helped Patna win their second consecutive PKL championship.
Atrachali also holds the league’s all-time record for total tackle points, but his short stint with Patna makes it difficult to place him above Shadloui in a franchise specific ranking.
Jaideep and Sandeep Narwal
Jaideep played a major role during Patna’s historic Season 5 title-winning campaign. The left-corner recorded 71 tackle points and provided the defensive support needed behind Pardeep Narwal’s incredible raiding performances.
He continued to provide consistency during the following season and remains an important name among the Patna Pirates all-time players.
Sandeep Narwal was another major figure during Patna’s early years. An aggressive all-rounder who could also operate effectively from the right corner, Narwal was a key part of the team’s first three seasons.
His physical tackling style and ability to produce crucial ankle holds and blocks helped Patna win their first PKL title in Season 3.
Neeraj Kumar: Defensive Leader
Neeraj Kumar deserves special mention for his consistency and leadership. The right cover defender and former Patna captain produced a remarkable 11 tackle points against Puneri Paltan in Season 7, equalling the record for most tackle points by a cover defender in a single match.
His long association with Patna made him an important defensive figure for the franchise.
Why Shadloui Is No. 1
Fazel Atrachali has an outstanding legacy, while Jaideep, Sandeep Narwal and Neeraj Kumar all played important roles in Patna’s history.
But Shadloui’s combination of individual dominance, longevity and record-breaking performances gives him the edge.
He won the Best Defender award during his debut campaign, helped Patna reach the final and then produced the greatest single-match defensive performance in PKL history.
For those reasons, Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh is the choice for the Patna Pirates best defender and the greatest defensive player in the franchise’s history.
